"Im currently rebuilding a reverse rotation crusader 270, and just got my machine work all done and new pistons installed on the old connecting rods. The machine told me that the directional notch on the top of the piston should be facing backwards towards the flywheel because it is a reverse engine, but I could have sworn the were facing normal when I took it apart (but I wasnt paying much attention at the time.

The machinist is correct. This

The machinist is correct. This gets the thrust side of the piston where it belongs.

You should also check to see i

You should also check to see if the rods were installed properly on the pistons. If not you will have bearing failure. The wipers should be next to the counter thros. Not together or oposite if installed incorrectly. I have seen this done many times by mechanics or newly trained machinist.
