I have a 1982 sea swirl and I drained the lower sterndrive and found water in it then came the oil it was merky black and grey. When I bought the boat I had the guy run the motor and turn the prop forward and reverse. How heavey is the whole sterndrv and what kind of job am I looking at? I have never worked on sterndrives before although I have some mechanical knowledge.

"you need to get a manual and read up on how to pressure test the lower. If you have fishing line in the propshaft seal, you may be able to reseal right on the boat.
Another option if the grey is metallic, is to just look for another used or rebuilt lower.
Rebuilding is not that difficult, only a few special tools.
If you can set up a differential in a car or truck, it's the same sort of skill set - preload of tapered roller bearings, that sort of thing.
The whole drive weighs about 70 pounds."
