"I get heavy black smoke on any semi/semi-rapid throttle up or down from my starboard engine only. None after up to speed. I am having many things suggested as the issue but all are expensive and only one is the right one. Examples -Turbo coolers, wait gate on turbo, injectors, injector timing. Anybody got an idea how to rule out one or the other?? Thanks in advance for assistance -Ted"

"G'day Ted,
Start with the easy ones first such as the turbo and waste gate. Remove air box and clean
turbo impeller; i use brake kleen spray solvent then check w-gate arm for movement and clean. Given the symptons it seems the turbo might be a bit slow spooling up.

Cheers,
Shakey."

"Other than what Doug Tremble suggested, I would have the injectors reconditioned. It is usually the problem. Have seen this many times and reconditioning will give you better atomizing instead of pooling that occurs with worn injectors. It is doubtful that the injector timing is out unless the injector pump has been tampered with."
