"1988 165hp 3.7L Mercruiser,the original engine coupler was replaced at 320hrs, now at 680hrs it needs to be replaced again. Is this normal service life?. The engine alignment is checked and the outdrive serviced each season.The outdrive always slides out and is reinstalled smoothly."

"I'd say the length of time a coupler will last depends a lot on the type of use the boat is receiving.
Skiing,pulling water toys,hauling heavy loads are all hard on couplers. Also,incorrect gearing or prop can reduce the life of a coupler. The coupler is kind of the weak link in the drive line. Look at how the boat is being used as a possible cause of the failures."
