"I have a 3.0 ltr Mercruiser, coupled to Merc alpha out drive. I bought this boat in April and am convinced the problem I had with a blown head gasket is because of the overheating problems I am having now. The question is where I start. Does this engine have a water pump and thermostat? Does the out drive have an impeller? Any help would be greatly appreciated"

With all due respect, your post tells me you need a Merc. manual for the engine and one for the OD. You don't provide a year for the engine. Go to eBay Motors and search for "Mercruiser manual 19__ 3.0L engine". Also search for "Mercruiser 19__ Alpha 1 manual".

The engine has a circulating water pump on the front of the engine and a water impeller pump in the OD. Just a WAG; your problem may be the impeller which is a common failed maintenance part that will cause an overheat problem. The thermostat is usually not a common problem.

Select your engine from the site below. It has parts by numbers and blown up drawings.

Select your OD from the list below. Yours is either an R/MR/Alpha One Gen 1 or Alpha One Gen 2.

"Start with a compression test for the head gasket, change the impeller and housing regardless and put a thermal gun on the hoses and manifolds to check for temp and flow!!"
