When you split lower unit from upper does the brass shift shaft hang freely from the upper after it is out of the splines and then pushed up into a slot and the cable will turn it to change gears. My main problem started with it being in between two gears. Could the brass shaft be stripped or what any suggests on things to check. All ready had lower unit apart and gears are ok and replaces all seals and gaskets.
