"AQ 225 e coupled to VP270, 1986 21 foot Bayliner Trophy Backfires at > 3K rpm.intermitently. Boat always maintained tuned. Will go several days or weeks without problem then backfire for a day or return to Marina. Last year adding Lucas Brand fuel treatment seems to help. Have had the top end redone a few years ago when trying to fix the problem. Any thoughts?"

"You'll need to use the P of E (process of elimination). One item, and only one item at a time until you either find the source or elminate others.
Don't just throw parts at it. Throwing parts may eventually correct the issue, but having the knowledge of what caused this is invaluable.

Given the limited info, and given that this is intermitant, I'd probably start with ignition.
