"Just bought a 96 bayliner capri 1950 with a 3.0L mercruiser. It is extremely hard to steer, have greased it up well. Anything I can do to make it better? Is there an aftermarket power steering I can add?"

"To troubleshoot properly

1. disconnect the cable from the steering lever behind the motor. It is a pin with a small cotter pin typically.

Retry turning the steering wheel and if it is still tight, replace it.

NOTHING else usually can be done.

The inner core wears out the insulation outer core and creates high resistance.

Typical cost is around $140.00 +/-"

kghost is right (as always,

I had the same problem earlier this year and replaced. Now it steers like a brand new boat, and you will be suprized that it drives like a brand new boat!

You mean replace the steering cable, not the wheel."
