"I have 1979 Mercruiser 470.

"I have 1979 Mercruiser 470. When I run the engine for about an hour it will not crank. It will not turnover it tries but just will not turnover it sounds like the battery is weak but it is not. I have tried just about everything resetting the time, changing points and condensors, coil, spark plugs, plug wires. The other day it did it and i tried a few more times to get it to crank and the solenoid started to smoke a little. The temp is fine while running usually gauge shows around 170. I am at my wits end trying to have a good time on the lake with the kids and have to be towed in. It should not be this complicated."

Replace the battery cables wit

Replace the battery cables with new ones.

Also is it getting hot? above 180 degrees?

Replaced battery cables alread

Replaced battery cables already. I am not an expert at all. The gauge shows that it is ok around 160 to 170. When you remove engine cover the motor is very hot as far as touch. Any other suggestions.

"solenoid started to smoke a little"

You cooked it so replace it before it quits 10 miles out at dusk.

Do you run the blower constantly?
