"I inherited a boat, did the 100 hour service, took it out and within less than one hour the shifting gears were melted. Couldn't go forward or backward. Took it back in and they said gears were melted, but they didn't know how it happened. Told by another boat service provider that the oil wasn't topped off and that will melt the gears. Anyone know about this phenomena?"

"The boat was built in 2001, but is listed as a 2002 model. Forgive my lack of familiarity with the boat, as I just took on the tasks of it within the past two months. I recall that the second service provider stated that the oil bottle in the boat must have gotten low, triggering the alarm, but since we were on the water, we tried to get it closer to where we could take it out of the water, before we got there, the gears melted."

Lack of oil is the main culprit. When you changed the drive oil , who/how was it filled?"
