New to the diesel side of the house. Currently have a 1966 Californian express twin gas. Started looking at the Californian trawlers for future purchase. What do I need to look for in a diesel powered boat vs a gas boat. How many hours is too much in a diesel vs gas? Any input welcome
Thanks
Jim

"hi james,
a diesel should run at least twice the hours of a petrol engine, check the engine hour counter(if fitted)on control panel, also maintenance log,if serviced regulery, alough several hundred hours, boat engines are not like road vehicle engines they dont clock up thousands of miles, also marine diesels run at lower revs.the most important point is changing oil&filter often, fire the engine up and listen for any loud thumps a gentle knock(the diesel knock)is normal also check any leaks or eccessive back pressure at the oil filler if a water cooled exhaust be sure water is coming out exhaust pipe,no smoke or very little at high and low revs.my own engine a perkins 4.107 is 42 yrs.old was overhauld in 96'and runs like a swiss watch.all the best,Ronnie."
