"Your coil (assuming the dist has points?) should have 3 wires on the negative post ( 2 gray and 1 black), the pos post should have 2 wires (purple/black and purple/red)

The neg post 1 gray from the tach, 1 gray from ESA and 1 black from the points.
The pos post purple/black from the start solenoid, purple/red from the splice off the alternator.

"Thank You Mr. Hill
Excellant Diagram!!!!
And yes it has points.
Ive had this boat for 7 years. i would like to keep it for a long time. i do not know why the esa was unhooked but i am about to find out. I replaced the shift cable 2 years ago and i can go into frwd and reverse w / no problem, but with a CLUNK.(No Grinding) Very rarely i can not shift back to nuetral. I have read alot of post that refers to the esa so i think i need to get this fixed while i am ahead.
Thanks Again!

"Could be the ESA is defective

"Could be the ESA is defective, you'll find out when you hook it back up. Also check your idle (in gear) RPM's, should be around 600-650 to minimize the "clunk" when going into gear."
