"Been needing to swap out the ball gears on my 800 stringer for at least a year. I've been dreading the job and putting it off for a long time. Thanks to the great info from Derick Scott Hoffer, Bud Fox and Morten Ringvold from a series of posts last summer I finally did the job. After recieving the parts and a shop manual I tore into the outdrive at 4 pm last monday. By 7:45 I had it all back together with new ball gears and seals installed. The shift cable was just long enough so it didn't need to come off. However I did need to heat the gear from the upper drive to get it loose, no big deal. The ball gear on the intermediate shaft just fell off by itself.
