"There is a discussion on another forum as to whether or not you should lift the motor cover prior to starting inboard and IO engines. I figured I'd ask you guys as this is where I always come for the right answers. So, does lifting the motor cover help ventilate the bilge or does it actually increase explosion possibilities?"

"First of all you should have

"First of all you should have a bilge blower that is run for a few minutes before starting, always hold your hand over the vent to ensure the blower is running and air is being exhausted. Lifting the doghouse is still a good idea though but not just for ventilation, gives you a chance to give the engine a quick once over looking for fluid leaks in the bilge, broken belts/wires, etc plus use the old nose as a fume detector."

"I always lift the Engine Cove

"I always lift the Engine Cover before starting. As Bob said, it's a good way to spot leaks."

Lift the cover- much easier to

Lift the cover- much easier to fight fire if the cover is up than if you have a sleeper fire and then ventilate it.
