"While putting the prop back o

"While putting the prop back onto the shaft of the motor (50hp Yamaha), my husband dropped the washer into the lower unit, next to the shaft. It fell out of sight. We looked inside with a flashlight, but can't see it. Tried a magnet, no luck. Do we attempt to remove the portion of the lower unit that houses the prop shaft? We are newbies to boating, so reluctant to start taking things apart without knowing if we'll break something. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!}"

"Rather than dismantle the g/b

"Rather than dismantle the g/box, it would be safer and easier to simply remove the lower unit as a whole. there should be 4 bolts above the cav. plate and depending on the model, a 5th bolt coming up from under the skeg or remove the rubber plug at the end of the cav plate and the bolt is in that recess.Disconnect the speedo tube if fitted and simply remove the unit. Tip it up to retrieve the washer.Re-assemble in reverse order but do apply some grease to the shaft splines and bolt threads. Good luck."

there is no way the washer wou

there is no way the washer would of went into the lower unit that is sealed so nothing gets into the gear box. i would look around on the ground for it or in the slots of the prop. the gear case has to be sealed to keep the oil in and water out! let us know what you find out?

"Don't take anything else

"Don't take anything else apart!

Get a flashlight and a mechanics pick-up (the gripper kind, not magnetic). Or, maybe some chewing gum on a stick? Or maybe blast it out with the garden hose."
