"Hello-
I have just purchased an '73 Bertram, which had two 318s replaced in the 90's. The serial numbers start with K10xxxxx. Does anyone know where I can get the information about the engines from the serial numbers? Many thanks.
Bill"

"We have been told that the K serial numbers were actually built by Indmar in 1990-91 from components purchased from Chrylser when they went out of business. Indmar has no records on these engines. We want to know how many hours are on really the engines. The timers indicate 7200 hours and we think that the engines were replaced and timers were not reset. The person we bought the boat from put about 600 hours on it and believed that he got the boat with about 20 hours on it. We believe him, but don't know if the owner before him gave him an accurate assessment."

"It may be tough for you to get to the bottom of that one. Often times, even the brass plates that Brian King mentioned can't be trusted re: the originality of a motor....as they can be transfered to new new longblocks, etc.

Although it really doesn't tell you a ton about the overall condition of the engine, pulling the valve covers is an easy exercise and can sometimes tip you off to whether there's been a recent rebuild/refresh. New(er) springs from a rebuild/reman will often have colored markings that wouldn't have been there (or would be long gone) on original/much older springs. Obviously, overall appearence of those components and the amount of gunk/build up can tell you something (new or old engine).

I've seen engines that people prepared to replace motors that they believed to be completely original yet, once valve covers and/or intake come off, it's obvious that they've been very recently rebuilt/refreshed.

It's worth a look....for piece of mind if nothing else."

My 318BWR10-333 has serial number 92887. Does that mean that it was built between 1965 and 1966?

"If you want to be positive, don't go by the brass plate/tag, rather, check out the casting number on the side of the block. One side will have a long number that ends in 318. Go to the other side of the block, and look above the freeze plugs....close to the head. You should find a date code (month/day/year)."
