1986 305 mercruiser overheats

1986 305 mercruiser overheats at low rpm below 1100.kick it up over 1200 cools right down. do not know if raw water pump has ever been changed. what should i be looking for. thanks

"Jeremy, as you described, you have a raw-water cooled. I have a 2000 5.0, RWC & normally runs 175/178 when idling or WOT.

After 9-years, running in 80% in salt-water, I had to replace the exhaust manifolds and elbows, due to temp gradually increasing to 180/185.

Once I removed the elbows, you could see all the years of corrosion, clogging the water passages in both the manifolds and the elbows.

After replacing these items earlier this year, we are back to the 175-degree range!
