I loose neutral when boat is warmed up

I am having a hard time puttin

I am having a hard time putting boat in neutral or reverse after boat is warmed up. I have a 1986 140 I/O merc. But shifts fine after boat is shut down.

"Yes it is hard to take it out of gear, Is the interlock switch small black and has 2 wires and sits on top of the tappet cover on the merc. 140 ?

"Look for a switch where the control box's shift cable ends and connects, via a pivot link, to the outdrive's shift cable.

If it overheated recently, probably time to change the shift cable going out back."
