Hi I would like to swap my gas engine Volvo 225E with a 290 Drive to a Diesel TAMD 40. Want to know if the stern drive fits and works so I can change only the engine as the drive is in perfect running condition.

I can tell you that it would not be worth the trouble to attempt a engine swap. The bellhousing on the 225 is only compatible with a GM 305 or 350 ci 1985 and down model year engines. Thats your first big problem. Second will be the gear ratio of the diesel outdrive and the gas outdrive. I can tell you that the diesel puts out more torque but at a lower RPM, so the issue will be a boat that probably will not spin your prop fast enough, so you would also have to reprop and regear your drive. Your gas engine's RPM tops out at 4400 while the diesel is 3600. Lastly the boat desigh better be able to handle the additional weight of the diesel, I think an extra 400lbs.
