Merc 140 engine rattlenoise

"Hello all, I have a 1985 19.5

"Hello all, I have a 1985 19.5 Glasply cuddy with a Mercruiser 140, After it's warmed up, If I take it above 4000 rpm I get a rattling noise in the top end, kinda sounds like a rocker arm or a lifter. I have a friend with the same engine and he too has this issue and has not yet tracked down the source of the noise, Any thoughts. Thanks"
 
is it a rattling or a snapping

is it a rattling or a snapping? My merc was doing the same thing and it turned out to be a lifter rap.

That is my next step, I pulled it out of the water last night and brought it home, I'm thinking maybe a valve adjustment, sounds like a rocker arm floating around when I get above 4000 rpm.

I sold last years Glasply w/470 merc and now have the 140 Merc. I really like this engine, think I need to change out my Prop for a bigger one for more top end but thats another post"
