"I have na 85 hp Chrysler Model 857I Ser 3852.
It has intermittent spark. I really hate to condem the CDI as it's costly. I have installed new points and it ran ... then it wouldn't. took it to a knowlageable chrysler guy, and it started right up. went to the lake and while launching I shifted into reverse and it died .. again no spark .. hauled it home and there was spark, about six times and then nothing.
Will the CDI become that intermittent? or could there be another thing to look for ... Grounding problem?
I do have a constant 12 V. at the red line which also feeds the CDI.
I do have a Clymers manual, but it's not alot of help here."

Would ground the cdi and try again. Also try and ground the block to the bat --make sure it is a good connection. Would change the ground from the the bucket to the block.

Is the 'bucket' the terminal block on the left (port) side of the motor?
Thanks

"The "bucket " is the

"The "bucket " is the tub the engine is surrounded by.(holds the hood) Chrysler used to put their main ground on that and then a jumper to the block. If you put the ground on the block, you have a better connection to the ignition. They did that on newer motors."
