View Full Version : 1994 Force 120HP lower unit

"How difficult is it to replace the lower unit on this motor? I'd like to save a little $$ if it's not too bad. Is the water pump installation tricky too? I read where there are some pinions that could cause grief if the pump isn't positioned correctly.

Also, does anyone know where I can find another lower unit without spending $1000+ on it?

Thanks in advance! http://www.marineengine.com/discus/clipart/happy.gif

I mistakenly entered the year of the motor as a 1994. It's actually a 1991. Sorry!

"They only had 2 types, so you can replace it without problems. The big deal with the single piece lower is the crush sleeve under the water pump."

"Thanks, William. What are the two types that you're referring to?"

They had a small single piece lower unit and they had the big one. Both had a crush sleeve below the water pump to hold the pinion gear in place. The sleeve had to be replaced every time the lower water pump housing was removed- almost no exceptions. It looks like a corrugated ring.

"Am I correct in assuming that I'll need a new water pump to go with the new lower unit? I was going to buy a water pump kit for this, so I'll check to see if the kit includes the crush sleeve.

Thanks again William!"
