"How difficult is it to replac

"How difficult is it to replace the lower unit on this motor? I'd like to save a little $$ if it's not too bad. Is the water pump installation tricky too? I read where there are some pinions that could cause grief if the pump isn't positioned correctly.

Also, does anyone know where I can find another lower unit without spending $1000+ on it?

They had a small single piece

They had a small single piece lower unit and they had the big one. Both had a crush sleeve below the water pump to hold the pinion gear in place. The sleeve had to be replaced every time the lower water pump housing was removed- almost no exceptions. It looks like a corrugated ring.

"Am I correct in assuming that I'll need a new water pump to go with the new lower unit? I was going to buy a water pump kit for this, so I'll check to see if the kit includes the crush sleeve.
