"Got a small tic in the engine on my 88 Merc 4.3lx. Any way to quiet it without tearing it apart and redoing the lifters? also, can you use mystery oil in a boat engine?
Thanks

Best and first thing to do is

Best and first thing to do is to remove the valve cover of the suspected side and adjust the noisy lifter/rocker arm.

If that does not fix the noise then a lifter will be needed if tha t is the root cause.

Adding mystery oil only will add to the mystery!

Oh yah

due to the age IE: 2

Oh yah

due to the age IE: 21 years old you may be looking at a worn cam shaft lobe. that would require a new cam shaft.

With the valve cover removed and the engine running watch the rocker arm in question and see if it moves the same amount as the others. If not you may have a rounded lobe......

can i ask a stupid question he

can i ask a stupid question here? What CAUSES the lifter to rap? not enough oil? Just worn metal? Im just wondering. Thanks for the help!

Well there may be several reas

Well there may be several reasons

loose rocker arm nut on rocker arm stud

components in lifter worn out (plunger/ball etc)

bad cam shaft lobe

bent push rod
bad/worn push rod end (s)

worn rocker arm

weak valve spring

not enough wood chips under the valve cover to muffle the sound??????.....LOL
