I am a new boater and am looking at an entry level 1992 Bayliner Capri Boawrider 20.5' with an "L-Drive". I know nothing and want a professional opinion on the units and whether I can trust them on the water...

""L" drive was an experiment gone bad. They had many problems, the worst of which getting the exhaust boot to stay put. When it came loose, you were good for trolling speed only. The carbs could only be adjusted on the water. And had the "new" ignition system. Find a nice outboard and be happy. At least when that goes bad, you can bolt on another one of what ever brand you want.

They did have a magical ride when they worked, just stay off the beaches."
