Runing 57 engine without sterndrive on

What would be the procedure to

What would be the procedure to starting my 5.7 mercruiser with out the stern drive on and water adapter hooked up to stern drive. Would like to run and check out engine before putting stern drive back on.

Stick a hose into the water in

Stick a hose into the water inlet hole on the gimbal housing that the outdrive bolts onto.
