I have a chance to buy a 1986 Grady White 24' that needs the Volvo engine rebuilt. The boat is in great shape and I could probably get it for about $3000.Is it worth it?I always had Mercruisers and know nothing about Volvo.

"the VP engines except from a few things aren't any diff then the Merc ones. usually just cooling, manifolds or ignition system."

"Don't spend a dime until you have the floor, stringers and transom inspected for rot especially under the OD and engine mounts. If it has rot all you have is a $3,000 birdbath."

Frankly I've owned both VP and MCM. If the rest of the boat looks good as Guy suggests I would stick with the Volvo! Way simpler and stronger drive. All your doing is replacing a chev Small Block. Besides once the hole is cut in the transom for a specific brand of drive you may have to fill it and re-cut it. Not worth the effort since VPs are great drives. Now if it had OMC I would seriously consider replacing everything or not even buying the boat.
