Mercruiser 30 and volvo leg can they fit together

Ok here goes: i have recently purchased myself my first boat, cheap as its in pieces, the previous owner had removed the old engine and bought a replacement but then lost interest hence its now mine. the engine is a 3.0 mercruiser (and half in bits) and today i tried to fit it to the volvo leg that is fitted to the boat. i found that their are 2 types of flywheels and dampers and wonder if their is a damper available to mate the 2 together (ie my volvo leg to the mercruiser crankshaft) i have many more issues to sort out but you have to start somewhere! many thanks! mat."

"you need the Volvo Penta parts that bolt to the back of that engine, Mercs are totally different, except for starter and flywheel. You'll need the correct bell housing for that year engine."

"Thanks I have both the merc and Volvo flywheel and coupling but the Volvo coupling has a proud center piece where it bolts to the flywheel hence it can't be fitted, is their a modifyed coupling available that will fit? Many thanks"

"As far as the engines go there may be no difference.
The flywheel is a flywheel and if it was off a 4 cylinder than it can be bolted to any other 4 cylinder.
If you have the Volvo coupler, flywheel and bellhousing and the Volvo transom assembly then it should work. What you can NOT do is use a Volvo outdrive and a merc transon assembly, flywheel or bellhousing.
The motor mounts and coupler splines may be different."

You may need to use the volvo flywheel and coupler, You'll also need to check the clearance of the starter to the flywheel and try it before you put it in the boat."

"Hi and a big thanks for your help all!!! right i am going to try and load some pics of the parts,(this didnt work as my pics are 600+kb and am only allowed to load up to 100kb) the volvo coupler wont bolt to my engine as it has a proud center piece on the side that bolts to the flywheel so i am guessing i need to use the merc flywheel and coupler but the coupler doesnt mate with the shaft in the boat, is it poss to change the shaft? and whats it called? the flywheel housing(i believe a volvo one?) is still attached to the boat and the merc engine does bolt to it, i have the merc flywheel housing also. I have looked up the engine number to trace the year and spec but i cant find any that start with an L like mine does? my engine number is: L631559 and the casting on the head reads: 14096620 but the 9 and the 6's could be 8's! many thanks, Mat."

"I think the problem you may find is that the VP shaft is longer than the Merc shaft, I know the dia is the same for the gimbal bearing and I think the U-joints are the same (starting to forget things)

The Merc also has a "proud" center where it bolts to the flywheel and that depends on the year of the engine, the one peice rear seal cranks use a different coupler than the older ones.

What is the year and serial number of your VP engine ? You need to know the year to get the parts right."
