Hi can any one tell me where I

Hi can any one tell me where I can get a new or recon starter for my 2.3 ford /OMC Cobra
I am in the UK South ISLE OF WIGHT

Hi thanks was hoping to get on

Hi thanks was hoping to get one from UK
do you know what car's this starter was fitted to ?

Well how shall I put it only h

Well how shall I put it only had the boat a few weeks now and kaboom sounds like a good idea LOL
But the gut's of car starter would be the same ?.
The full story of what happend is we took the boat out for first just in the harbour as we knew the boat had been laid up for a while . It turnned over slow starting it so took the starter in to be checked over /service I also got new batt as that was down. When I got STARTER back they told me the starter was dead not working at all ?

"Insurance companies watch for

"Insurance companies watch for stuff like that when there is a kaboom.

But seriously why not take it in and have it rebuilt at a near by reputable shop?

Here is a place in the UK that sells them, their PN is MES338M and looks like it's 123pd

http://www.tmp-omc.co.uk/starters.html"

Reputable shop LOL the problem

Reputable shop LOL the problem with living on the Island there is only one shop and he is the one that messed it up .
Think I will end up getting a new one I phoned a few UK companys that say they have one on the net only to find they don't have them
The site you just gave me has one listed for £123 I would be glad to pay this if they have one .
It seems that most thing's are from the USA and where never imported into the UK
The love of boat's lol

Hi Bob I ended up doing starte

Hi Bob I ended up doing starter my self not such a big job and yes it work's.But will still be getting a new one Monday.
But been reading post's you seem to know these out drives inside out.
We took the boat out for a test run todayand have a water problem .I have new pump but can not get water to the engine unless I take hose off by the stat and give it a few revs then it pumps fine. Put hose back on and it keeps pumping unless you drop to low idel for a while then you have to do it again?
I have new stat and running temp goes up and down 140 to 150 never constant .
It is as if it has air lock but can not see how this is posible ?
Any idea's
Other than that am well happy with the boat was the first time out today that we could open it up

"When you say "new pump&#3

"When you say "new pump" are you referring to the pump in the upper drive, if so did you change just the impeller or the housing and SS liner? Take the rear cover off and look at the little drain hose coming from the pump housing, take it off and blow through (make sure it's not plugged), also make sure the o ring that goes all the way around the inside of the housing is ok, if it still fails I would replace the impeller again, I don't think some of the aftermarket ones out there are as good as the original OEM ones."

Hi Bob
I just changed the imp

Hi Bob
I just changed the impeller the rest of the pump was fine O ring was in good order as was back plate .I will check the drain today.
When you take pipe off engine at 900 rpm I have no water till rev the engine then it pump's as it should shall we say like fire hose LOL as I get soaked every time.
The only thing thinking about air getting in is when you do thei the leg is under water ??
Gord

Hi
The drain hole was part b

Hi
The drain hole was part blocked it did pass air but it has some gasket seal it it I airlined it and it's now clear. have stripped the leg and have all new seals coming and another new impellor .
Not sure there is anything else I can do ?
Does this sound right to you I got a new micro switch for gear change £60 ?
Gord

60 pounds for a switch???? Th

60 pounds for a switch???? That's terrible! I'm curious though why you think it's the switch? What kind of problems are you having?

Yes £60.73 works out about $

Yes £60.73 works out about $ 96 just the micro switch no plugs nearly fell over LOL
The one that is on the boat is sticking some times it does not work at all another time it would stay on with a meter on it in the water it kills the engine after a while so best replace it.
Same dealer asked £500 for starter motor or £250 for pattern one I got one in the end for £120 plus post from that company you told me about.

Hi Bob still waiting for water

Hi Bob still waiting for water tube seal part's hopeing this week. But did check water houseing in lower part of leg .Not sure who rebiult leg and put new gear's in but who ever took that houseing off the work butcher comes to mind.
There was no gasket and it looked like they had used screwdriver to force it apart leaving big marks in houseing so bad had to use chemical metal to repair it .
Now lower leg is water tight .
As there does not seem to be any way of knowing you have water running up to the engine is there any way of putting presure switch in line with light on dash if presure drops ? As by the time temp goes up it is to late engine is over heating.
Gord

"Gordon....have not heard of a

"Gordon....have not heard of anyone installing a pressure switch on the water input line, they do sell water pressure gauge kits though, you tee off the input line and run a small hose to a gauge, of course you have to remember to watch the gauge

"The quickest way to 'disc

"The quickest way to 'discover' loss of cooling water is to install a temp switch with alarm in the exhaust riser. Not common on stern drives, but used in most inboard (straight shaft) applications."

Oh I would remember to watch t

Oh I would remember to watch the gauge alright got to be better than having to pull off the hose to see if I have water pumping .
Can not see why there is no tell tale showing that cooling water is being pumped

Well leg back together did pre

Well leg back together did pressure test with air line and it seems to be tight so will put it back on the boat and see.

Still not happy about not having some sort of tell tale that you can look at to see if engine is getting cooling water pumped up.

Know what your saying Morten but on that sort of lay out you can just look over the side and see if water coming out off exhaust. With this you just got temp gauge and by the time that goes up it is a bit late

Give you a laugh thou I ordered new exhaust bellows thinking mine was shot only to fine new one had holes in it as well !!!

Thank's Bob
Just looked a

Thank's Bob
Just looked at the posting not sure it would work as when running the thermostat makes the temp go up and down all the time it does not hold a steady temp ?
I am new to this boat and this leg so don't know if this is normal thing but have fitted new stat first thing I did.

I have been thinking may be a engine oil pressure switch might do the job I want ?
As they switch at about 4 psi and would be able to put it in the housing before the thermostat telling me I have water getting to the engine not sure what the pump pressure is ?
Coming out of the engine there will be very little pressure as the engine is raw water cooled and it is stat controlled

"Actually I was thinking more

"Actually I was thinking more along the lines of being able to adapt it to fit in the input line to the t-stat so it would only be used to let you know you have water flow coming from the outdrive pump, it wouldn't let you know if the t-stat crapped out or of any blockages on the exhaust side.

Yes the oil pressure switch might just work also."

Just been on to the online sho

Just been on to the online shop reading that yes it would work just the job
Thank's when I looked first time it did not sink in I just looked at fix to elbow .
Should think before typing lol

Bob as this topic seems to be

Bob as this topic seems to be all over the place here is another one for you .
Can you tell me a company in the USA that stocks most part's that would send to UK ?
As most part's I try and get over here seem to have to be orderd from the USA and takes ages then to be told on back order so don't know when I will get them.
It would be good if I could order direct then at least I would know when they going to get here.

But on a good note we had the boat out last night and all was well but think we need bigger engine LOL
Thanks for your help

"Hi Gordon...sorry can't h

"Hi Gordon...sorry can't help you with the bigger engine

For parts, this site right here at MarineEngine.com seem to carry a good selection and I'm pretty sure they offer international shipping.

Another place that has a pretty extensive inventory and they have online parts catalog's is Doug Russell which also offers international shipping http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/index.cfm"

And there was me thinking you

And there was me thinking you would have one laying around engine that is LOL

Now we have the basics sorted on the boat need a few other part's oil pressure sender being one and can not find any one who does the square gauges over here .
I would like to get a full service kit for the engine as well the 2.3 Pinto has never been imported into the UK we only have the 2 litter and 1.6.

Have you ever come across any one bolting a turbo onto one of these engines ? I know it can be done on car's as have done it to the RS 2000 Escort's .
I know the boat is never going to be a race boat but it just bog's down going on the plane takes for ever at around 4 rpm unless you put some one up the bow.You could never pull a skier they would be dead by the time they got up LOL
It's not the prop as it will rev out 5 rpm 37mph trimmed out once you get it up there

"Well you could always buy my

"Well you could always buy my boat and take one or both of the 460's in it and turn yours into a low flying sea plane

.
Unfortunately the under powered comment was quite common for Bayliner back in those days. They were trying their best to put a very affordable product on the market and putting the bare minimum power plant in was one way to save $$$, of course you could always upgrade for some more $$$ but that was only when buying new. Never heard of anyone putting a turbo on one of these, but maybe someone else has and will chime in? Unless your really stuck on that boat maybe it's time to look around, I know over here there are some good deals to be had!"

"One big difference to the UK

"One big difference to the UK and the USA our petrol is over £5 a gallon
angry.gif
at todays rate about think it is about 1.5$ to the £ at MO so your two would keep us broke LOL.
I don't think this engine is the right engine for the boat as the boat is badged as having 3 litter in it not the 2.3 if it had the 3 litter it would have just that bit it needs to get out the water .
I will have a play have year's of car tuning under my belt I know I can get 300 bhp out of a car with 2 litter engine and be reliable .
As it has a carb the fastest option is to bolt turbo on it and rework the exhaust after working on the leg the engine must lose so much power by routing the exhaust into the leg
thumbs_down.gif
.

Not sure where you are but I am on the Isle Of Wight south coast of UK it is not that warm over here so the boat get's little use plus to many other hobbies we only got it because it was cheap and seemed a good idea at the time like you do.
The boat it's self is in very good condition you would think it about 4 year's old not 20 have all the paper work from new only two owners first 10 year's was on Italian lakes
It is just the right size we can trailer it and we have two lad's one is especial needs so he can get in and out OK

But yes in an ideal world would like to sell up and live on a cat in the Caribbean I took a Fairline round Florida and loved it over there your way of life

Well think we should call it

Well think we should call it rip off Briton ?
A water pump in the USA $166 the same pump in the UK £200
So does any one know besides Bob what the BHP of the 2.3 engine is ?
I am thinking time to change the engine for some thing used in the UK it will be cheaper in the long run

BHP= (block horse power?&#

BHP= (block horse power?) Don't know for sure but the standard 3.0 is only rated for approx 120

No only 120 that is so low for

No only 120 that is so low for that size of engine. I was thinking the 2.3 would be making 140-150 bhp I am shocked
I was thinking of using the BMW diesel 2.5 175bhp only thing it it is a 6 in line take up more boat space
