"73 chrysler 318....appears to be original alternator....Has a small lite green wire running to a small silver box, that box has a red wire going to ballast resister...Alt also has a larger orange wire going into the wiring harness....no other wires visable....Is this correct??? How should it be wired???

The person that pulled the engine for me moved away....motor is in, but I'm lost on the alt wiring....

Thanks, Daron"

"Here's the deal: One big red wire from the alternator goes to the battery. Smaller wire(s) go to the voltage regulator, and IT gets 12 volts from some ignition ON source like the ballast resistor. So it might be okay.

Does everything work? And does the regulator go to zero volts with the key off?

Jeff"

If you have a charging relay &

If you have a charging relay ( small box with three screw type wire terminals) The wire from the battery terminal of the alt goes to the 'A' terminal of the charging relay and splits to go to the battery terminal of the regulator. The field wire from the alt goes to the field side of the regulator. SEnd me your Email and I will send a copy of the wiring diagram.
