"i have twin 360's and my Port motor reads 22 vacuum at idle and the starboard reads 19. when i was on my trip to Catalina they both read 15 under load at about 1300-1400 RPM. my boat is heavy at 15,000lbs plus we carry alot of crap w/ full fuel, water 4 adults and 2 kids.

i was told that watching the vacuum was an old fashioned way to guage fuel burn. 1300 RPM keeps me right around hull speed. I'm not sure if there is a acceptable range for vacuum?"

"More like zero at 3,000 rpms cruise speeds. Poor boat engines are always "going uphill" as a wise person once said.

"I guess my question is: if the vacuum is higher, then i assume my fuel burn is better? less vacuum means engine is working harder and burning more fuel? do i have the correct understanding?"

"You do, but the differences between your two motors is negligible.

A fuel flow metering set up like a FloScan or Navman would do you a lot more good. I have one and it's paid for itself many times over.
