"It's a combination voltag

"It's a combination voltage amplifier and coil firing device. It gets a signal from a trigger of some sort-either points or a infrared shutter or a coil winding. Then it sends out a pulse of some 300 volts or more to a coil winding of a particular cylinder and that runs the voltage up to 40,000 volts or so (on a good day) and that fires a particular coil."
