Does anyone know why my port e

Does anyone know why my port engine shuts down everytime I put the port side engine control in reverse when docking my boat?

This is a nuisance everytime I dock the boat.

I have 1987 Searay Amberjack with twin 165 mercs.

Check the operation

Check the operation of the interupt switch where the shift cable mounts at the rear of the engine.
It sounds as if the lower shift cable is failing.
These cables give very little warning before they fail and leave you stranded. But since you have twins it's not so bad you can still make it back in."
