i grounded the ignition timming wire to the block {the white purple wire on top of intake manifold started motor ran at 600 rpm set timming at 8 before tdc stop motor disc ground recheck timming timming is at 8 deg btdc at 600 and goes to aprox 10-12 btc at 3500 puzzled

Thunderbolt IV and V have no advance in the dist. It's all done in the module. If it is fuel injected (or carb before they got rid of the knock module) you could have issues with the knock sensor module.

"Jim: The reason for grounding that wire is to put the advance at zero, so you cna time it. With the ground dsconnected the module adds the amount of advance it should for that engine speed. That is normal.
