Overheat problems

bought a 20ft webbcraft 1979 w

bought a 20ft webbcraft 1979 witha omc 230hp boat hadbeen unused for2yearsbut proper storage tehnics were followed after purchase a pulled all plugs and cranked the engine to get wall and bearings lubbed and to build some oil pressure cleaned and regapped plugs and points plugs looked fantastic changed oil and filter changed fuel filter put muffs on outdrive and cranked it up good oil pressure no bangs or knocks let the temp get to 160 and shut it down launched it the next day and at 3/4 throttle it started to overheat throttled back and parked it changed the thermostat but after talking to the local expert decidedto pull it out of the water just giong fast enough to put it on plane to the loading area can any body out there help diagnose what the problem ive been told that running an outdrive out of waterwill blow the pump in the outdrive any opinions or fixes outthere thanks retchef

"If You crancked an engine that has been sitting for 2 years without water to the pump: Off with te drive and check Your waterpump!
Suggest You get a manual for Your engine and drive, might be handy."
