How do you find your engine se

How do you find your engine serial number ? Where is it located ?

my title says the model is 55873r which makes it a 1968 55 hp engine but it is titled as a 1973 Johnson 60 hp which is also what the engine is marked.

Before I order a manual how can a person identify the correct model ?

Sorry meant the model number which I did find and is listed as 55873r ... any idea what the r stands for ?

it is a manufacturers code for the series or type--
I think it only had significance for the factory and dearlers
