"Changed the plug wires on '88 Crusader 454 and now getting backfire, I think, while at higher rpm under load. Is this the wires or did I cross one or bad wire, etc?

Is a very loud popping/bang think is backfiring, could bad plug, wires, etc cause this?

Thanks"

Recheck the wire configuration

Recheck the wire configuration. It sounds like you have a couple crossed.

"Thanks Rick, this cap has no numbers. How can I check them? Someone just said from TDC but not sure how to do that.

Also noticed the new wires are 7mm vs the 8mm that were on there. Think the 8's were wrong though as the new ones are from Crusader dealer and checked the part #. This is the newer? elctronic ignition.
Thanks"

I have a 1989 mainship 35 with 454 Crusaders. The carburators have been replaced and now I have backfire at 2800 RPM from the carb. I narrowed it down to a plug wire on the # 2 Plug I was able to remove the plug wire and the Backfire stopped. Is this Correct? Should i change all the wires? The inside of the distribter does look rusty.
