Oil plug wont screw back in

"I have a 1963 Sea King"Gale Model"40 hp,I was draining the oil on the lower half,down by the prop,an now the plug wont go back in,? there is metal thats in the way what do I do to get the plug back in?Please help. Model#GG18805A SERIAL#36X881219"
