Alpha 1 outdrive

"Hello all...new to group here

"Hello all...new to group here and I have a question for you. I am helping out a frined with trying to get his boat up and running. It has the Merc 3.0L, does that mean he has the alpha 1 outdrive? How do you check the level in the lower unit? what do you fill it with and how much? I do see the 2 flat head plugs...one near the skeg and the other is about half way up.

"The top plug is the vent scre

"The top plug is the vent screw and the oil should be up to the bottom edge of the vent hole. Oil is added from the bottom drain plug screw when filling w/the top plug out. If you insert your little finger into the top hole and don't get oil then it may be leaking out or wasn't filled properly. Use Mercruiser OD oil, 85-90 weight.

What year is the boat? Is the top of the OD flat?"

"Define "half way up" You could have a early type drive. The year can be found using the last 2 hull serial numbers, online manual downloads are listed"
