"I want a boat that I can use in salt and fresh water. Most of the sailboats in my area are fresh water boats cooled by raw water intake. Most of the engines are Atomic 4 gas, Universal diesel, or Yanmar diesel. Is it feasible, mechanically and/or economically to convert to a closed cooling system or is the better route to get a replacement engine that comes with a closed system?"

"There is a manufacturer in Florida that sells kits to convert to fresh water cooling for around $5-600. Assuming you are handy, you can do it yourself.
For what it is worth, stay away from inboard gas engines like the Atomic 4."

Once an engine has been operat

Once an engine has been operating in sea water it builds up a scale. This is difficult to get rid of when you convert to Fresh Water Cooling systems. Often causing blockages. Sen Dure is a FWC aftermarket heat exchanger company and they make the kits. You will find most new engines have this FWC system as a standard.
