1988 Merc inboard is hard to s

1988 Merc inboard is hard to start on the trailer and when it is warm. I have installed a clear fuel filter to observe if the sytem is getting fuel. After the motor has been started and turned off the fuel travels back to the pump is this nornal or is this the problem?

The fuel should not travel back to the pump if it does the valves in the pump are leaking...

Is the air under the engine cowl very hot as the motor fuel system and carby could be vapourising.

Yes; not worth rebuilding a 1988 pump."
