I have a 1987 Merc 260. All the crankcase ventilation is done through the two breather tubes that run from the valve cover to the flame arrestor. Why doesn't that engine run a PCV valve? Would I be doing harm to install a vacuum port and pcv valve on one side of the engine? Thanks for your input.

"Marine engines do not use PVC systems.
Reason,
There is not enough vacuum at higher throttle positions to keep the PVC valve open. In this case the engine can't vent the crankcase.
The engine needs free venting so air will move through the system."

I cannot answer your question

I cannot answer your question about adding a PCV to your engine but I can say that the guest post is incorrect. My 1999 5.0L Volvo Penta/GM based engine does have a PCV and the factory parts diagram does show this valve.

Thanks for the input. I see visitors point with the vacuum issue. I am going to install a PCV valve because most of my run time is below 3000 rpm. And thank you Steve. That is what I was looking for. Peter D

"Unless the throttle is ALL the way open, there is always enough vacuum to pull air through the motor, making the PVC system work.
