working with my 79' century with merc 350, 898 outdrive. i pulled the timing chain cover for inspection. i found the timing chain to have enough slack on the slack side to move the chain a 1/4" or so side to side. how much is too much? should it be replaced? any advice is appreciated."

"thanks bondo,

think i'm gonna leave it alone and see what happens.

also, i'm gonna change my old mallory points style distributor to electronic setup. would like to find decent used setup, but will get new if i have to. should i be looking for a thunderbolt iv. or is any that came off a 5.7 marine gonna be ok? and, if i find a good used distributor will it be hard to find the control box that should be used with that given distributor?"

you are already at the timing

you are already at the timing chain and gears and you can get them at your local autoparts store for about 30 dollars it does not make sence to me not to change them. you will save yourself from possible trouble in the future.
