"When using "outboard motor flushers" or "ear muffs" on an outboard, is there any danger in running the engine in gear? A fellow at the marina told me it shouldn't be done.

Only if you catch the hose wit

Only if you catch the hose with the prop..obviously it shouldn't be left unattended...as the neighbors cat or dog could end up as a fatality.

"It shouldn't be done for three reasons.

1) It is not safe to anyone, including you if your leg gets to close.

2) If you do it long enough you can overheat the prop shaft bearings.

3) It doesn't accomplish anything by running it in gear."

I only run mine in gear on the

I only run mine in gear on the hose just to check the shift adjustment on the cables....in forward & reverse..back to neutral...adjust if neccesary and check again...like Guru says no reason for leaving it in gear to run for any period of time
