Iam having what I think is transmission slippage. My prop wont engage until about 1500 rpm.I have checked the linkage and it dose not make a difference.I was told the transmission was made by mercury in the late 70's I think it is T330.which no parts are around anymore.Going to have my prop checked to see if it is slipping but other wise Iam lost.Any help on something I might need to do or check or recheck would be greatly appreciated.Thank you.....also need to know where to buy a transmission that they still make parts for. Thanks

"sounds like you have a TR, TR

"sounds like you have a TR, TRII or TRS drive with a MercTrans or MercTransII
Try googling those terms.

Check the transmission fluid level. Pretty sure it takes Mercon, or Type F like the old Ford automatics used."

"Sorry yes I should have said.

"Sorry yes I should have said.It is a TRS drive.Ihad my rubber boot on the back that was bad and I guess that was how water was getting in my transmission.I have flushed it out and added Lucas trans stop slip, but no help.Iam afraid I have damaged the transmission.I have been told you cant get parts for these trans anymore that
mercury only made these trannys for 3 or 4 years.
I do thank you for your time.If you know of something else I should do ,,or where I might find parts for this or another tranny set up I would be thankful."

"I think the clutch discs inside are Ford automatic trans discs- maybe C4 or C6 trans from a Ford car.
And that would be the victims of water damage. I bet any reputable tranny shop could rebuild it, but there are a few guys around the country who do these transmissions regularly.
google is your friend"

"Not sure if you solved your problem but here is some more info. The TRS had two different transmissions in front of it.
The first type was known as the Merctrans and I can confirm (as Hy Stat suggested) that it did use Ford clutch discs as I have used Ford FMX clutch discs in my rebuild. Parts are very hard to get although I have sourced them from KC Marine in Washington state. (Google merctrans)
The second type was the the Borg Warner Velvet Drive 7x series which I understand are a heavier duty transmission and a lot easier to get parts for.

Back to the Merctrans if that's what you have. They can "slip" for the following reasons;
1) Incorrect trans fluid. Use Type F only as the additional additives in later types (Dexron) can cause slippage. I use Redline synthetic type F but any synthetic type F will probably do the job.
2) Worn out / destroyed clutch disks. In my case I found bits of clutch material when I drained the fluid. The fluid also smelt "burnt" / "oxidised"
3) Low pump pressure from the internal pump. The clutch pack relies on oil pressure form the internal pump to clamp the plates together. If the pump is faulty or the pressure relief valve is sticking open you won't have enough pressure to stop the clutch pack from slipping.

The good news is that if you can source the parts, any competent auto trans specialist can probably rebuild for you. Alternatively you can ship to one of the specialist shops that still service these. I found the one I mentioned above through Google and found them very helpful including shipping the parts "down-under" and providing a bit of advice over the phone.

Once working properly they are a beautiful smooth shifting trans.

Apologies for the long post but I was in a similar situation a few years and thought that I would share what I learnt as there doesn't seem to much info around on these.

Regards,

Mike"
