"My engine will start fine, but when I shift back to idle it dies. I can restart it, but every time I shift it to idle it will die. The engine runs great other than this. Any ideas?"

You mean shift to neutral?
sounds like a failing lower shift cable. If the cable has too much drag, it holds the shift interrupt switch closed too long and kills the ignition. Watch the switch (it's in the engine compartment- follow the cables) while a helper shifts."

"it can be adjusted for shifting, but that doesn't typically fix the stalling. If it's an original 1996 cable, it's time...
Probably time for all bellows, water hose, gimbal... the whole transom service replacing all the soft parts.
