Engine rpm never reach maximum

One of my 1999 inboard mercrui

One of my 1999 inboard mercruiser 7.4's has stopped reaching full throttle rpm (4100) and only goes to 3600. Engine starts fine and runs smoothly but tops out at 3600.I changed fuel/water filter and still the same. Help! Thanks
 
Dinged prop? Barnacles on pro

Dinged prop? Barnacles on prop (bad this year)? Advance in distributor not working right (check with a timing light)? Carb not fully opening?

Whoops! Missed that it was on

Whoops! Missed that it was one of those new-fangled computerized deals. You need to get the ECU scanned for any codes stored in there.

"After replacing all the plugs, further investigation indicated that 1 cyclinder was not firing (but the engine still ran smoothly to the ear!). Using fuel injector clearer didn't correct the problem so the next step will be to replace the injector. Stay tuned for the results!"
