"Hey guys, im looking to buy an 89 5.0 Merc for a good price, but the story behind it is the guy was running the boat, the oil pressure dropped, he limped home, the engine didnt knock at all, then found the fuel pump had gone bad, diluting the oil. He flushed the oil 5 times, replaced fuel pump, and now the motor knocks over 2500rpm. He says its the main bearings. Could it be more? It it worth a try?"

"Just rebuild it since diluted oil can damage every lubricated part. Buying a used engine can be about the same price as a rebuild. By rebuilding it you'll know what you have compared to buying a used engine can be hit or miss.

"You could pull it apart and see what you have, but you are likely better off to replace it with a rebuilt marine 350. Better performance and it will bolt right in. All accesories can be swapped over.
