454 runs then dies

"I have a 1989 egg harbor with twin merc 454's. The port engine is not running properly. Afer about two hours at cruise speed the engine will just cut out. Some times it will restart and other times it will take a long time to get restarted. Once it is restarted it will run fine for about 45 minutes then cut out and restart again, so on and so on. I have no idea what is causing this please help me. I replaced the points in the distributor, the fuel pump, all filters, spark plugs, and the fuel is good the generator runs off of it. Please help me, i have lost faith in my boat."

"Sounds like something is getting hot or tired and laying down.

You need to narrow the list of "usual suspects". Next time it does this pull the coil wire from the distributor and have someone crank her over. Is there a nice blue spark (3/4 inch long)? If yes, pull the flame arrestor off and pump the throttle. Does gas squirt out the accelerator pump?

This investigation should narrow the field somewhat so you can fix it.
