Mercruiser 37 battery cable smokes

I just put a new solenoid on the starter and it cranks slowly. Tried two batteries. The negative battery cable smokes. The cables are connected to the correct posts.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks."
 
Take the connections apart and

Take the connections apart and clean them thoroughly and reassemble. Make sure everything is nice and tight.

Sounds like you have a loose connnection and the resistance at the weak connection is getting hot.

I cleaned them like you guys s

I cleaned them like you guys said and no problems now. Cranks real good. I even got the motor started after cleaning the points in the distributor. Thanks again. Bob

Well... Keep in mind when you clean the points, you may need to re-gap the points, in which case you will need to check/set the ignition timing. (timing light)"
